The game's story is set fifteen years after the events of Tekken 2. The focus is now on a new character, Jin Kazama, who seeks to avenge his mother's death and gain vengeance against his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima. Each character has their own reasons for entering the tournament, and their stories unfold as they advance in the competition.
